Lohan pine
English:
The lohan pine, an evergreen tree in the pine family, derives its name from the resemblance of its fruit and spherical seeds to a Buddhist monk's robe. Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea, it thrives on rugged cliffs and rocky terrain. Despite the harsh conditions, it flourishes and grows well, symbolizing resilience and the will to survive in adversity. In the Song Dynasty poet Chao Gongsu's work Elder Zhongyan's Letter Sending Off the Buddhist Pine, the tree's condition reflects the author's detachment from worldly matters, pursuit of inner peace, and reverence for Zen Buddhist philosophy.
