Chinese

Cunninghamia

The Chinese cunninghamia, an evergreen tree from the cypress family, is native to northeastern and northern China, extending to Korea and Japan. Its needle-like leaves are long and sharp, with a deep green color. The branches spiral upward, forming a shape reminiscent of a coiled dragon, symbolizing supreme power and nobility, as well as loyalty and longevity.

In his poem "Ancient Cypress at the Temple of Marquis Wu," the Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin reminisces about the deeds of Zhuge Liang, portraying the ancient cypress as a guardian of unwavering loyalty. Despite the wear of time, it stands tall and resilient, steadfastly protecting the Temple of Marquis Wu.
